Alibaug is located in India's state of Maharashtra . Alibaug is a coastal town in Raigad, Maharashtra. Its beaches are very popular and Alibaug is a popular getaway from Mumbai since it’s located just about 100 kms from Mumbai. Alibaug is well-connected with Mumbai by road, rail and ferry. Alibaug was developed in the 17th century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre the naval chief of King Shivaji's Kingdom. Alibaug is a coastal town and municipal council in Raigad district in Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. It is the headquarters of the Raigad district. Raigad's first name was "Kulaba". Today's Ramnath was the main village at that time. A Bene Israelite named Ali used to live there at that time. He was a rich man and owned many plantations of mangoes and coconuts in his gardens. Hence the locals used to call the place "Alichi Bagh"(Marathi for "Gardens of Ali"), or simply "Alibaug", and the name stuck.

Located just 95.3 km from Mumbai, Alibaug is a coastal town and a municipal council in Raigad District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The place is known for its local fish delicacies, palatial sea forts and sun-kissed beaches. Some of the popular tourist places at Alibaug are the Khanderi Fort, Kolaba Fort, Alibaug Beach, Kaneshwar Temples and Someshwar Temples. Alibaug Beaches. Akshi Beach. This is one of the best places to visit in Alibaug. It is serene, clean and has a shallow gradient. The sand extends about 100m. Alibag was developed in the 17th century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, the Naval chief of King Shivaji's kingdom.Declared as a Taluka place in 1852,Added four Talukas and Kulaba district was formed in 1869.Many people used to call Alibag as Shribag. (Specially our Sanskrit teacher).Now they formed 'Shribag' as a part of Alibag. Some people used to mention Alibaug as 'Kulaba'The population of alibag was around 5000 in 1881. (I don't guarantee about the authenticity of the information. I read it somewhere) Starting of Schools in 1924, Alibag was not directly connected to Mumbai at that time. People used to travel by sea from Revas, Dharmtar or Mankule. The scenario changed in 1964. By Air

Alibaug can be reached by air via Mumbai airport, Which is well connected to all domestic and international destinations.

By Rail

Alibag is not served by the Central Railway. The nearest Central Railway stations are very far -Panvel, 85 km away and Roha, 50 km away.

By Road

MSRTC buses should be available from various parts of Maharashtra. If you are leaving from Mumbai, then you have an option of boarding MSRTC buses, leaving every 30 mins - 1 hr from the Mumbai Central Bus Station. Though they might be uncomfortable, they top in terms of punctuality. Remember to grab a window seat,Private buses can be chartered - a good option if you are going in a large group.Take a car or a taxi from Mumbai. Alibaug is on the way to Goa from Mumbai, so you could do the trip as part of a trip down south to Goa. To reach Alibaug from Mumbai, take the Mumbai-Goa-Ernakulam National Highway (NH17). At Wadkhal 'naka'(crossing), which is a little 8 km ahead of Pen, continue straight (the left turn keeps you on the highway to Goa), and you are now on the road to Alibaug, Alibaug is about 22 km from that point,From Pune, take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and take the Khopoli exit. From there drive towards Pen (30 km), then cross Mumbai-Goa highway to proceed towards Alibaug.

By Boat

Alibaug is a coastal town 100 kms South of Mumbai and easily approachable via a short ferry ride from South Mumbai (Gateway of India) to Mandwa (20 kms from Alibaug). Alibaug is the first beach South of Mumbai and most accessible and therefore most popular as a getaway,There are ferries and catamarans available from the Gateway of India, Mumbai. The journey takes 2 hours. However, service is suspended during the rains, i.e. May-October. The ferry takes you to Rewas and you are taken on a bus to Alibag. The cost of the bus trip is usually included in the ferry fare. This is the recommended way of getting to Alibag. Tourist Places in Alibaug

Beaches around Alibaug include Awas, Kihim, Varsoli, Alibaug beach and Nagaon. Varsoli and Nagaon are good idyllic beaches with some character. Kihim and Awas are rocky in character and Alibaug beach is most touristy of all beaches. Kihim and Nagaon has operators that offer watersports on weekends.Alibaug is also home to some renowned restaurants serving ethnic cuisine, most notable being Sanman (located right on town center). Alibaug otherwise has a few sightseeing areas such as a museum, couple of temples, Sea fort (Colaba Fort) and some drives.

Alibaug Beach

Alibaug Beach is one of the prominent beaches of Alibaug town in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Among all the beaches, Alibaug Beach has the blackest sand deposits. There is a mazhar of Ali Shah Bawa in the middle of the town and the beach has been named after him

Kihim Beach

Kihim Beach is situated 12 km from Alibaug and 120 km from Mumbai. The beach lies to the north of the city and is surrounded by various trees with colourful butterflies, coconut trees and wild flowers. The Kihim Beach retains its natural beauty as it is an undiscovered.

Janjira Fort

Janjira Fort is a sea fort that is situated at a distance of 55.2 km from Alibaug. The fort is 40 ft high and was built in 15th century AD under the rule of Emperor Malik Amber, who was the ruler of Ahmednagar. It is believed that the fort for over 350 years.

Nagaon Beach

Nagaon Beach is a beautiful beach situated 7 km from Alibaug on Alibaug-Revdanda route in the Raigad District of Maharashtra. The beach is surrounded by suru trees and cypress grove and is visited by number of tourists for its clean water. Water sports like boat ride, kayaking.

Mandwa Beach

Mandwa Beach is located 20 km north of Alibaug and is thronged by number of tourists. The village of Mandwa, which is also located nearby, attracts visitors due to the presence of dense coconut trees. Chaul is also a popular tourist spot situated near the beach

Versoli Beach

Kolaba Fort

Kolaba Fort is located at the distance of around 1 km from the Alibaug Beach in the coastal town of Alibaug. This sea fort was constructed by Maratha warrior, Shivaji Maharaj, which has 25 ft high, 350 ft wide and 900 ft long walls. The fort dates back to around 300 years

Someshwar Temple

Someshwar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple in Akshi, which is situated at a distance of 3 km from Alibaug. It was built by Satavahana rulers and the structure reflects the architectural style of their ruling period.A popular story is associated with the temple that Lord Shiva also known as Someshwar drank poison. Hence, devotees and tourists from all over visit the temple to seek blessings of the lord.

Khanderi Fort

Khanderi Fort is situated around 4 km from Alibaug, which was constructed on a small island by the Maratha ruler in 1678. There are two popular attractions in the fort, which are a temple devoted to Lord Vitthal and a Tomb of Daud Pir. Towards the north of the fort at about fifty yards, there is a wooden roofed temple with small tile in which Lord Vitthal is worshipped. Both the temple and the tomb are worshipped by the fisherman passing near the island. These deities are believed to rule over the waves, which are steep in northerly gales and in the Khanderi neighbourhood.The fort remained under the rule of Marathas until 1750, which later became a part of the Peshwa territory. Moreover, the fort was under the British rule, where they built a lighthouse, which is in ruins at present. This lighthouse was called as an octagonal masonry tower, which was built in 1867 with a height of 75 ft. On a flat roofed house, it was constructed with a lantern in the centre, which is 161 ft above the sea level.At the time of danger, a red ray was shown, which covered the seaward of Alibaug and Ceul. To the north-east of the tower, there was a 200 ft high flag staff stand. At present, the fort is under the control and management of Bombay Port Trust Administration. By using local boats, visitors can reach the site after the permission of Bombay Port Trust.

Rewas Jetty

Rewas Jetty is around 23 km from Alibaug and is known for Mumbai Launch Service. From the jetty, Uran can be seen, a part of Navi Mumbai. This place is located 6 km from Kihim Beach and is an ideal getaway from the city life.

Revdanda Fort

Revdanda Fort is located around 17 km from Alibaug and is also known as Revdanda Aagarkot. The fort was built by a Portuguese Captain, Soj in 1558. From the fort, tourists can have a view of the Revdanda Port. The Salav Bridge at the port connects Murud and Alibaug, and offers a complete view of the port, beach and Revdanda Fort.Tourists can explore the fort that has seven-storey tower covered with betel nut plantations. During high tide, the site offers a beautiful view of the palm-fringed ramparts that are touched by waves.

Hanuman Temple

Hanuman Temple is located in the premises of Kanakeshwar Devasthan Temple at a distance of 13 km from Alibaug. The idol worshipped is of God Hanuman, the devotee of Lord Sri Ram. This temple is situated atop a hill at a height of 900 ft and devotees climb around 5,000 stairs to reach the temple.

Akshi Beach

Akshi Beach is located at a distance of around 5 km from Alibaug town in a hamlet Akshi. It is a white sand beach with numerous suru trees present along the coast. The beach is frequented by tourists in large number as a variety of birds and different flora can be seen at the beach. Akshi Beach has clean water and is ideal for swimming purposes. Moreover, tourists interested in local literature can also explore an old epigraph dating back to 1012.

Jai Bhavani Temple

Jai Bhavani Temple is a 12th century structure dedicated to the goddess Bhavani. Bhavani is the Hindu goddess, who is considered as the source of energy and power of nature. The deity present at this place has eight arms, holding the head of the demon Mahishasura in one and weapons in other.

Kanhoji Angre Samadhi

Kanhoji Angre Samadhi is a beautiful tourist spot in Alibaug that was built in memory of the great Maratha Admiral Kanhoji Angre. The samadhi has eight faces and the sculptured pillars, which have been dilapidated, however stand firm.

Kanakeshwar Devasthan Temple

Kanakeshwar Devasthan Temple is a popular Shiva temple situated at distance of around 13 km from Alibaug. The temple is located on a hill, which is 900 ft high. In order to reach the temple, tourists have to climb around 5,000 stairs.There are other temples dedicated to Sri Balram Krishna, Sri Hanuman and Lord Shiva in its premises, out of which Shiva temple is considered as the main temple. The statue of Lord Shiva is 54 ft high. Besides, Pushkarna Kund, circular in shape, is also a prominent attraction located behind the temple.

Sagargad

Sagargad is a deserted hill fort, around 7 km from Alibaug, which dates back to the time of Maratha ruler, Shivaji. It is located at a height of 1,357 ft above the sea level. The fort can be reached by taking a dirt-track road, which begins from Khandala on Alibaug road. On the way, tourists might come across an Ashram and Siddheshwar Temple. A waterfall can be seen at this spot, which emerges during the monsoon. The main entrance of the fort and the two bastions are completely damaged. The fort also has a temple and a tank inside its building. There is also another tank inside the fort which is famous by the name of Pandav Kund. At this place, nine tombs of Satis can be found by the travellers and is called Sati Plateau. To the side of this plateau, Wanartok is present, which is an erected land mass in a thumb like shape.

Brahma Kund

Brahma Kund is a piece of art, which is situated on the top of the hill and is 20 km from Alibaug. There are two popular kunds at this place, the Shiva pool and the Brahma pond. Brahma Kund is a rectangular shape tank, surrounded by steps from all the four sides. It is believed that the kund was constructed in 1612. As per mythology, Lord Krishna was bathed by Lord Brahma, who later collected the water and created this pool. The kund also attracts tourists for a small Maruti mandir and a statue of Mirchi Baba.
